Heits ’21, Braun ’21 honored by SHAPE Nebraska

Doane University seniors Haylee Heits and Mitchell Braun have been honored by SHAPE (Society of Health & Physical Educators) Nebraska as the Outstanding Exercise Science and Health Education Majors of the Year. Doane was the only institution in Nebraska to have multiple students named an "Outstanding Major of the Year" from SHAPE this year.

Denny McElravy has been around the Doane football program for the last 55 years, serving as the Equipment Manager for the last few decades. His impact on the players, coaches, and support staff throughout the years is immeasurable.

Franzen steps down as Athletic Director

 

Matt Franzen has announced he will be stepping down from his position as Athletic Director at Doane later this month. Franzen has had an interest in returning to coaching and was introduced as the next Head Football Coach at Hastings College Tuesday afternoon.

Jon Thomas ’16

Jon Thomas, a 2016 Doane graduate and 2020 graduate of Washburn University's School of Law, has joined Svehla Law Offices in York as the newest attorney on staff. Thomas passed the bar exam in August and was sworn in on September 15. Jon joins his father, Ken, as two of the four attorneys at Svehla Law Offices. Jon graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Doane in August 2016.

ATHLETICS

MBB defeats Midland to notch first conference win

The Doane men's basketball team defeated Midland 68-64 Wednesday night to give the Tigers their first win in GPAC play this season. Overall, Doane improved to 4-5 on the season. Junior Joe Burt led Doane with 19 points, while Carson Busch added 15 points and Jaxon Harre added 10 points. Doane will play on the road at Dordt and Dakota Wesleyan this weekend. 

 

AROUND CAMPUS

Campus Caroling

Before the fall semester ended on the Crete campus, Doane Choir and Collegiate Chorale caroled around campus. The Doane band also performed outside at Cassel Theatre as well. Students were wearing masks and physically distanced, providing holiday cheer before students went home for winter break. 

IFS 1000 STEM Women Workshop

Doane biology professor Dr. Ramesh Laungani will be leading a workshop with 35 international researchers on December 10, titled the "IFS 1000 STEM Women Workshop." IFS (International Foundation for Science) supports a diverse group of scientists and the workshop Dr. Laungani will lead will focus on enhancing science communication skills. The individuals involved primarily serve as instructors at higher education institutions across the globe, located in 19 different countries. Dr. Laungani will speak about the science communication project he started, titled "1000 STEM Women Project," which is a database of videos created by women working in STEM across the world.
